Bike gear mechanism broke within days. Very disappointed and thinking about returning (which will be a pain due to size). -- Not good
A Mongoose is NOT always the 1500 to 3500 dollar bike that we adore. Recently I bought a mongoose for under 200 bucks. It came with what I call cheap wheels and tires very similar to those found on cheaper bikes..When you pay under 200 bucks you can't expect to get the stainless spokes and an almost perfectly tuned bike. I am guessing but I believe most of the cheaper Mongoose bikes may have some generic parts. For example my tires look like cheap 10-15 dollar tires. They are stamped with the load range at 198 Lbs.. HOWEVER, for a low priced bike I am HAPPY with mine and the tires are holding up well. I had to tune the bike and will soon take it apart and grease the bearings and cables. Both derailleurs front and back were not set correctly and she shifted like a dog. The front tire wobbled so badly it would rub on the brake shoe with each revolution and setting the hand brake was almost impossible. I fixed it by simply truing the wheel using a small wrench on the spokes and adjusting the derailleurs. This is easily done. I simply loosen the spoke that pulls the tire off to the side and tighten the two on the opposite side. I make small adjustments at a time until she is fixed.. I tuned the bike and now I LOVE her. Mine has 27 speeds.. I am 62 years old and still buff. I weigh just over 200 lbs. In granny gear this bike pulls hills very slowly and yes it takes some getting used to.. If you tune this bike and take care of it I believe you will get your money's worth unless you end up with a real lemon. It's best to consider what you want this bike to do before you buy. I tool around on the farm on mine and ride trails up to 3 or 4 miles a day just for exercise. If you want professional, pay out the yang, yang..If you want a bike to enjoy in your leisure time then this baby may work for you and save you big bucks too. -- You most often get what you pay for
I'm an amateur bike rider (just getting started) and really liked the bike at first. After taking it on a trail with my friend yesterday, I'm selling it to my neighbor. I'm 6'2" and about 230. The bike just doesn't fit me. In addition, on hills it takes alot of effort even in the lowest gear. It's probably fine for a smaller person or kid who just wants to ride around the neighborhood but if you want to hit the trails or have alot of hills, I'd get something else. One more thing, the seat is hard. -- Not really as good as I initially thought
Great bike for the price. Only flaw I noticed is that the stickers look like they will not last very long. It comes basically put together so you wont need to do very much. Great value! -- Great value!
We bought this Mongoose bike on Amazon but it really hasn't been a good experience. We bought the bike in November 2009. My son and I put the bike together and when it came down to putting on the front wheel, we found the rim was bent. We contacted Amazon and they told us that we could either (i) take a discount, (ii) buy another wheel on our own, or (iii) return the entire bike and they would replace it. We took option (iii) and dismantled the bike, packed it back in the shipping box and waited for the new bike to show up a few days later. We got all the parts the second time around. However, when my son started riding the bike up hills, the gears started to skip. We have contacted Mongoose customer service but have not heard anything back. We may have to pay for servicing the gears and that is too bad. The bike is nice to look at but its not like the great Mongoose bikes we have had in our family to date. Buyer beware! -- Not too happy
